Gossiping:Gossip on this

group of people
Gossip has become an art, Good people do the good that is in them. But evil people do the evil that is in them. The things people say come from inside them. Luke 6:45 The Bible is filled with God’s displeasure of the sin of gossip. The Bible addressed this at length in many passages. Here we hope to take a look at this distasteful character flaw and see if we can understand the reason why many resort to this behaviour.

When the Creator made us He made us so unique that no one on this planet is like us. We are so special to God that he took time to ensure our personality and mannerism is different. None of us could be mistaken for the other. As a result of sin fallen man became prone to many unsavoury attitudes and only a closer walk with Him can aid us in the struggle to overcome these traits.

They surround me with hateful words. They fight against me for no reason. Psalm 109:3. Here we see David though a king was not exempt from the brutal tongue and cruelty of gossip. Many people have been destroyed as a result of the hatred others have for them; by their gossip they manage to destroy many.  “The devil find work for idle hands.” Here in Timothy 5:15 Paul throws some light as to some of the reasons why people gossip.  “At the same time, they learn to go around from house to house since they have nothing else to do. Not only this, but they also gossip and get involved in other people’s business, saying things they shouldn’t say.” It is wrong to go about spreading falsehood with the intent to deceive and destroy reputations, God is not pleased.

Did you know the one who listens to the gossip is worse than the “gossiper?” Without any consumer the manufacturer would cease to produce, no one waste their time on products which no one cares about.
The Enemy is the manufacturer of lies the Bible says he is a liar from the beginning and he employs his subjects the slanderers, back-biters, false accusers, tale bearers and liars to do his biddings. “Oh! Gossip is charming!”  So they think if only they knew he that teaches them the art is the master of all lies and the enemy of their soul.

Today we are called to examine ourselves to see if we are guilty of this act; and ask ourselves whose side are we on? Whether we are on the side of God or the side of the enemy?  How often with an insinuation, a suggestive response or a silent nod do we ruin the reputation of others? How many have we slain? How many trees of righteousness have we fallen with the axe of gossip? Let us examine our hearts and remember, “Good people do the good that is in them. If a man does not make adjustment by correcting his flaws as he advances through life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man should keep his friendship in constant repair, put away hatred malice envy and back-biting and know there is a time for silence.

Some sound advice comes to us in the care of others by way of this ingredient. As well as in quotes; “Making and preserving friends. Select some sound hearts. Be careful not to bruise them with unfeeling words. Take of milk of human kindness one heartful. Add to this plenty of tact. Warm the mixture with plenty of sympathy. Do not let it get too hot at first, lest it only ferment mischief. Knead with plenty of oil of unselfishness to make all smooth. Beware of jars (lovely wording). The mixture should be kept in a warm corner of the heart. Years only serve to improve the flavour of friends thus preserved.”  Barry Humphries
